Solid spice in the 3rd act but everything else was pretty cringe.

now what the hell was this. I know that in order to read a romance novel of any sort, you have to be able to suspend your disbelief at points. That is a given. That being said, I have had to suspend my disbelief less for fantasy books set on different planets than I did for this contemporary romance novel. I am fully of the belief that men & woman can be friends without there being a sexual component. This was so far from that. Breaker and Lia were in an emotional romantic relationship w/o the sexual component for their entire "friendship," whilst Lia was engaged to another man and fully intending on getting married. Cuddling and falling asleep in bed with your "best friend" whilst being engaged is DIABOLICAL. That is 100% cheating IMO. I somewhat liked Breaker. He regularly expressed how inappropriate the situations were. When I read a romance book, I like to actually LIKE the characters and not think they're immature, manipulative, emotional cheaters. The author clearly used the deaths of her parents as a way to justify her behaviors and lack of advocacy for herself, which is valid to an extent, but that shouldn't have taken away from her overall agency as a human being. Now, the Not Like Other Girls trope is one thing, but to have that AND have the FMC judge other women? Oh absolutely not. Lia was def a NLOG. Naturally beautiful with messy red hair and freckles and big purple quirky glasses, she loves nerdy things, she never wears makeup, never wears dresses. Cue, the Other Woman, only there to be compared to the natural beauty of the FMC. Poor Birdy. She was a million times more likeable than Lia and I hope she gets her own book, though Megan will probably find a way to make me hate her too. Lia was ragging on her because she's blonde, puts time into her appearance (god forbid) and likes romcom movies. Girl you have to be kidding. Obviously she was jealous but thats so immature and really makes me dislike her. Breaker never made comments about Brian who was way more deserving of that kind of degradation. Serious question for Megan Quinn, why would you write a romantic comedy novel and make the FMC rag on women for liking romcom movies when I think its safe to say that a majority of the readers fall into that category? It is little details like that that really irk me. the spice was good though

Two stars because I genuinely enjoyed the first half. The second half (or maybe just last third) ruined it all for me. I couldn’t finish it without just skimming to the end. Big ole’ nope for me. Haven’t read the other books in the series and zero plans to do so.
