The examination of female friendship while growing up was so beautifully described. Woodson's writing is so lyrical and moves the story along with grace. I just wish this book was longer! I really loved the "On Writing Another Brooklyn" section at the end of the book as well. Woodson closed off her note with, "At the day's end, a writer lives alone with her story, wrestling with characters and settings, and the way light filters into and out of a scene. The deeper messages often escape her. Sometimes I take for granted the journey through the telling. At other times I curse the muse's power. but through it all, I live each day in deep gratitude." Are you kidding me? I'd cut off a limb if it meant I could write like that.

I first tried reading this book about a year ago, and couldn’t get past the second chapter. This time around, I was able to really enjoy the poetic writing style and characters. The pages are short, so you can read it quickly, but it is not an easy read by any means. Each sentence was written carefully and adds depth to the story, so it requires careful reading.

This book was such an interesting and well-written novella.  I was able to read this in practically one sitting and it flew by.

I loved the character growth that happened in this memoir-esque fiction. It felt so real and I was definitely empathizing with the main character and her friends.

The writing in this book is absolutely beautiful. One thing I really loved about it was its repetition of memory, and how it played around that theme.  There were some twists I didn't really see coming and the unreliability of the main characters memory really kept me on my toes.

Great and important story.

Very poetic and meaningful. Good book for when you want to feel a bit down and depressed, I just don't tend to like those kind of books.
