It looks like Pinter had ideas about a lot of tricks - mostly aimed at confusing the audience like ambiguous identity, confusions of time and place etc. And Pinter does write his first play that display all those tricks. The problem is that the tricks are all you get. There is not much of plot or understandable characters. It is like a dish made entirely of spices.

I am impressed - I am delighted. Pinter has worked a wonder here. The best play I've read in a long time.

His structure is interesting yet I really enjoy the rhythm
funny fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix

A play inspired by the Theater of the Absurd's Waiting for Godot, I kind of preferred The Birthday Party over Godot because my less-intelligent-self enjoys a story that makes some sort of sense. While I didn't understand why it ended the way it did, it seemed to flow better, with the remnants of Beckett-esque repetitive nonsensical speak confusing me as usual.
