I loved this. Even though I only read the script, I could really picture it in my mind's eye. It was funny, heartbreaking and disconcerting. Had a kafkaesque quality to it.

Although, it has its perks, the play begins with an undeniable mundaneness. The mysterious wordplay in the secondact does grip the reader for a time, but the end, the third act, doesn't seem so different from the first, meaning it too is a little to mundane.

Def. liked betrayal more but this was still cool
I chose this at complete random, just for funsies to read a play. I had no idea that Pinter has like, his own style aka Pinteresque. What a way to find out!
A very strange, kind of funny(?), not like ha-ha that's a joke funny, but more like what the fuck is happening funny. Mostly bizarre.
The copy I read had a bunch of writing in the margins + things circled (love that), so I guess there's some themes and so on, but honestly I don't care. Part of the fun of reading a play is to imagine how it would be preformed. I think a bunch of these scenes would translate a lot better on stage than they did for me in black and white.

There's nothing easy about this play except for possibly its pace, which flies, and its structure, a traditional three acts. But the characters are all unreliable and inconsistent in their words. If you don't like abstract storytelling you'll likely hate "The Birthday Party," but if you enjoy ambiguity and filling in the blanks, it's an exhilarating piece of writing.
I've heard this play described as a comedy but maybe that comes with seeing it performed because it reads like a tragedy. The second and third acts border on horror after a mostly lighthearted first act. Something extremely grim is happening in these pages and you don't need to fully understand it to get that eerie feeling as you read it. Amazing stuff.

I both aspire and detest the level of weirdness of this play
