I’d say “Girlfriend needed to edit” but she DID and the thing was still the size of a dictionary. Anyway, some amazing bits and anecdotes amidst a lot of day to day “He said/She said/Then I said” and honestly I skimmed a bit but I enjoyed Mary’s voice.

As far as most people seem to be concerned, at least in their television viewing and book purchasing, there have been exactly 3 major events in world history: 1) Henry VIII married a bunch of wives 2) the US Civil War 3) Hitler. I'm on a personal crusade to demonstrate to the rest of the world that a bunch of other stuff happened through my own reading, so I generally avoid those eras. However, along with Gone With The Wind, this book represents one of the few portrayals of era #2 from the perspective of southern women. And what a southern woman! Mary Chesnut was at the centre of Confederate society, and seems to have spent the entire war sitting on sofas with leading generals and politicians in a series of ever-shabbier dresses.

However, this series of vignettes also makes the book difficult to read in parts, as the people she speaks to are not always clearly identified, nor is it clear from the dates what exactly is happening with the war at that time. It would have been helpful to have a timeline of war events running across the bottom of each page, rather than having to turn to Wikipedia to figure it out.
