This book delivered some top tier angst. The relationship between our MCs is fraught with past trauma, complicated feelings, and sexual tension. The author did a good job of revealing the key points of the story over time, keeping the reader engaged and invested in finding out what exactly happened to Xavi, and the pacing of dropping the little nuggets of the past is fairly well done.
The feelings of Nate towards Xavi are also slowly peeled away and like many things done in 1st person POV I would say that to a certain extent Nate is an unreliable narrator because what is clear to the reader isn't as clear to him under the climax of the book.
There are definitely a lot of triggers in this book so I recommend reading up on them in advance. I'm not sure I'd classify this as a true dark romance, but it is definitely on the darker side of gray simply because the emotional distress Nate causes Xavi and the dysfunctional nature of their relationship is pretty consistent throughout.
Moderate: Drug abuse, Toxic relationship, and Suicidal thoughts
