Maybe 3.5... I just didn't find myself as drawn into this one as with most of the earlier books in this series.

This wasn't my favorite of this series. It felt more like a setup for the next few books than a great story in its own right.

Another interesting installment in the Dobbs series, and one that begins the process of taking a look at the global context in the precarious interim between wars, as we know it to be. To watch the slow unfolding of WW11 through Masie's eyes is very thought-provoking -- and empathy-building, I think.

This was STILL a great book, even with being book # 9 in the series! Gotta love Maisie Dobbs!
For spoilers, please scroll:
I get worried that Maisie will never love anyone, she is such a career woman...it was looking like she was going to dump James, and thank heavens she didn't. I actually guessed this mystery, but I still loved it! I do think the author really left the door open for future books. There's the chance that Maisie and James will travel to America either alone or together and to Canada. I'll be reading everytime a new book comes out in this series! :)

The books in this series just keep getting better and, with the way she left this one, I'm really interested to see what direction she will take them in the future.

Nuanced & poignant. So many sad stories, yet the characters find the strength to love, forgive & embrace life.

Ooh this was a good one. Maisie in London, all the looming WW2 realities are... let's say ENTERING the pike, if not coming down it yet. Also, listen, Billy spends most of this novel in hospital, and that is fine. A little less aw shucks never hurt anybody.
