The artwork is the main star of this book, but the backstories the author gives are an insight into the process. From artistic technique to what inspired the story to what lies ahead for the author, the reader gets a glimpse of what goes into the writing and drawing process.

Varon's work is so wonderful that, honestly, I expected to like this collection more. I tend to love when graphic novelists/cartoonists reflect on their own work, and this collection had quite a few gems, but it was still a bit unfocused. I started writing this review as 4 stars but, I mean, what a great title! Some of this is too charming for anything less than 5.

Rating 4.5

Cute and enjoyable.

The stories were cute and sweet, but they just didn't wow me like her other work (which, I love--go read Robot Dreams right now!).

I'm just not sure what to think of this. The artwork is nicely done, but I got to the end of the collection and just sort of went "....ok...." It felt like there wasn't much of a point. I know there's some stories that are a look into the author's life during certain periods, which is why I shelved this in biography/memoirs. I just felt like there wasn't enough substance to it to justify its publication.

I would read a longer work by this author, and I did like the artwork.

(2.5) This may have been a case of poor expectations. There is a particular vibe to Sara Varon's work that manages to combine the mundane everyday with the really weird. And it's that odd crossover that has me working my way through all of her stories I can get my hands on. This collection wasn't my favorite, partly because the short stories were too short and snippy. The focus was more on her process than on the stories themselves, which was interesting, but not what I expected. Elements of work published elsewhere (a beginning for Robot Dreams, for example) are included.
