Our main character is Pereira, a portuguese man. He's a widower, he lives alone, he runs the cultural page of a small afternoon paper, the Lisboa and he's wondering about the reincarnation of the flesh... Among other things. The book is set in 1938, during Salazar's dictatorship of Portugal, as fascism is rising in Europe. Pereira sees himself as an apolitical man, but not everything is like he tries to convey. Through the meeting of different characters, Pereira starts to think about freedom of speech, authoritarism and the hegemony of the soul.
I read this for my local bookclub, and it was a fast, yet reflexive read. It made me both worry and sympathize about this middle age man, with whom I have next to nothing in common, so you can imagine is well written. Hope you enjoy it if you read it!
