“You can drive yourself crazy thinking about the past. But sometimes I think, actually, I didn´t have that much power over my life anyway. I mean, I couldn´t give myself a new personality out of nothing. And things just kind of happened to me."

Okay, now that I have let this sink in for some hours, perhaps I can arrange some thoughts into coherent sentences. I felt like writing a little something and practicing as well... I just wanted to say that my affection for Rooney´s work has been growing for the past three years thanks to a very dear friend of mine... and I think that is wholesome, getting to know an author whose work deals with the complexities and importance of relationships through an important relationship in my life. This book just adds up to that love. I´ll start by saying the work feels very different to me from what Rooney has done before, yet you can still perceive her style between lines; at the beginning I found it hard to keep track for the writing style inside the characters heads was a little overwhelming to me, but I think it adds its charm to the novel as well.

This book confronted me. My values, my beliefs, the way I view the people around me. It also made me think about my life at this very point for it is the first time I read a book where I´m the same age as one of its main characters. As always, I really appreciated the explorations on feelings like love, attraction, desire, anger... and of course this time, the explorations on how men might experience grief. Something that often times is not discussed in our society. Though I haven´t gone through what these people have experienced, I still can relate to many extents to the processes of each character and how that affects the others as well. That is for me my favorite thing about these books, the way in which Rooney crafts the human interactions to make them feel so real, yet concentrates on the complexities of each individuality, each person´s own world that determines their actions in everyday life; the understanding on how its backgrounds as people, their past experiences, their social status, etc, affect on who they are and the way they relate to each other. She also captures everytime life´s strange way of passing by and how that affects everything listed before. This novel was no exception. I absolutely enjoyed it, my only note would be that I would have loved deeper explorations on Margaret or Sylvia´s characters, althought I imagine why it wasn´t the case. This woman holds a special place on my bookshelves.

Can´t wait for a fifth book!
