Used my lunch break to finish this and am kicking myself for a wasted break. I'm honestly not sure how I didn't DNF this.

This has a lot of my favorite things in fantasy: a creepy forest setting, magic involving plants, talking animals, shape-shifting, curses, body horror.
I thought the whole idea was pretty cool, and I was engrossed in the storytelling for the entirety of the book. There's just a few important plot points that I think got glossed over and could have used a bit more development. I hope the author decides to revisit this world because I love the characters, and there definitely is so much that could be done with it.

4.5 stars.

this... did not have rights to be as good as it was? like i was expecting a quirky fairytale but i was so engrossed in this i couldn't put it down once i got started! everything, from cerys's powers to her relationship with fox, to uncovering a history better left unearthed, to that epic ending just was *chef's kiss* immaculate. i don't know what i was expecting, i'm always a sucker for ashley poston's writing, but this was... amazing perfect never been done ect.

the only, *only* reason it's not getting a full 5 is that i called the "plot twist" so early on it kinda took the wind out of my sails a bit, but otherwise this is a perfect fairytale that deserves the hype it's been getting.

Basically if Frozen 2, Uprooted, and Fruits Basket had a love-child.

If you’re looking for a dark fantasy a la Uprooted or an intricate backstory of two kingdoms who misunderstood each other, this isn’t that book.

If you’re looking for something light and easy-to-read , with the easy dialogue of a romance book, you’ll probably enjoy this. And the post-credit scene of sorts hinted about more stories in the world to come.

this book had so much potential, but sadly it had the same amount of it as it did flaws

the book is marketed as a fairytale, except this is more of a princess and the frog knockoff with an even more problematic romance, a basic fantasy plot, and predictable plot twists

nothing about this was really giving fairytale, and a lot of the interactions between the main character and other people were repetitive, for example her best friend was turned into a monster and for some reason throughout the entire book the only monster she encounters is her despite the entire town also being turned into monsters (it kinda just happened there wasn't really much of an explanation)

she also mentions her dad like twice despite him dying in like the fifth chapter, she mentions her mom a lot more even though she died like ten years ago

First of all, THE BEAR IS ....(kind of?) FINE. Ugh.

This book isn't ...exactly...bad per se..... but something about it just doesn't work.

It feels like the author had a cool idea for a zombie story but didn't really bother to flesh out anything else about it. Like, I don't think the world building particularly makes sense and I have a feeling that if I stick around long enough to see what the big reveal is, I'll be pretty disappointed. UPDATE: can confirm, book makes no sense. Also, book is annoying to have to slog through.

Thoughts while reading:
This heroine has never seen a horror movie ffs
So whenever your best friend became a zombie in front of you and you're walking with a bear through a haunted ass foggy woods and you hear your friend's voice calling to you....
Katniss everdeen is face palming so hard right now. Bro even Hansel and Gretel think that you're kind of a dumbass.
