SpoilerThere are some slower parts in the novel, especially surrounding Vampa, which made the reading experience a little tedious for a couple hundred pages. That is the sole reason I take off a star. I will judge it in its timeframe of creation, and overlook certain aspects of the story.

Now, the fun part is Edmond being Edmond. If you like a story where someone is plotting behind the scenes to create the downfall of his enemies, and you have a lot of patience, this novel is for you.

Halfway the story you wonder; aren't these downfalls coming with a lot of collateral damage? And yes, they are. And then you are taken back to Chateau d'If and you are reminded of why they took place in the first part.

Also, Edmond, you dumb. Haydée clearly likes you and you're blind. And deaf. Because I'm pretty sure she told you without room for debate or questioning. Twice.

One of my absolute favourites. A book that very early on gave me a deep understanding what revenge can feel and what it leads to (just a shallow sense of justice). Dumas has a great way of picturing people, places, history and context. He has a great way of developing the story and depict the people living in it. I love revisiting this book over the years to actually see how my view has developed on this book and how I emphatise differently with Dantes and his sorrowful life.
A truely great classic with a great original plot that many many modern movies are set upon.

I read the three musketeers years ago and I remember really enjoying the writing style of Dumas. True I did have the english translation so I wasn't 100% sure if it was the translation or Dumas but after reading this book I am certain it's just Dumas's brilliance. For how long this is (and it is so so long) I never got bored and I loved all the different parts of this story. It was incredible and as I own it on audiobook I can see myself listening again in the future, just as a little treat. Edmond Dante/The Count is so extra I loved him and totally supported his crazy and intricate revenge plan. I was pleasantly surprised when he ended up with Haydeé as I was rooting for her since we were introduced to her.
