LISTENED ON AUDIBLE

I have to say I've had an amazing run of excellent books lately. This is my first time with a fiction Audible and definitely not my last foray. Similarly to WHAT COMES AFTER, this story is plain great from first page to last. It's entertaining, the characters are strong and the author does a great job at moving the story along at just the right pace.

Do we all remember the hatred we felt for Dolores Umbridge the first time she was mentioned in HARRY POTTER - ORDER OF THE PHOENIX? By the end of this book, Alix gets to that level. I mean come ON, what a vile human being. The thing is, she definitely is alive and well in the 21st century...at least people like her. I'm sure we would all like to say "I would NEVER be like that!" while also thinking "hmmm I've either said this/would think like this/know someone who would think like this" at least a couple times in her part of the story.

It also did not unfold at all as I was expecting, and I loved pretty much every minute of it. I HIGHLY recommend this one.

I give it 3.5 stars. Pretty easy to listen to, and it moves quick enough, the characters were both likeable and unlikeable in the ways they were supposed to be, as well as relatable in ways I didn't always want them to be. Definitely made me think about what I'd have done in a similar situation, and attitudes I have had and currently have in this current climate of racial justice movements. By far my favorite part was the relationship between the protagonist and the child she babysat.

Solid 4 stars. This was kind of like *Yellowface* by RF Kuang in that it was like reading a train wreck that you couldn't look away from. I think there was more "likeable but flawed" characters here, but the vibe was similar only about racism and privilege. It didn't delve incredibly deeply into these things, definitely didn't do anything new in that regard. It's very approachable book-club fiction, but it was a good read, nonetheless. I really enjoyed it.

A fast-paced story that reads like you're watching a movie. The book follows Emira, a 26-year-old black woman making her way through young adulthood, and Alix, the wealthy white woman she babysits for. Through a tangle of events, race, class, and privilege shape their relationships and their lives. The story moves quickly, but with thoughtful reflections on the small moments that give depth to the characters. It is equally believable and vicious on race relations and how tiny comments or actions can shape the way we see each other.

I really wasn’t sure if I could handle this book right now. The story of a black babysitter cornered by white people in a grocery store and accuse her of kidnapping her charge was too close to home for me and I almost couldn’t read past that first chapter. I only came back to it because of book club. It’s a fast read, but certainly not an easy one. Definitely a lot to think about. A must read for everyone living in America right now. I am reminded though about why I don’t like books for adults...I wanted a more satisfying end. It’s too realistic this way.
