This is fantastic narrative nonfiction true crime. I remember a few headlines from this case a few years ago, but never really followed it. I had no idea there was a family history of crime and cover-up, and this gives such a good look at exactly what this small town was going through.

Real life makes the best story! What an incredibly thorough account of the entire Murdaugh dynasty and the saga of Alex Murdaugh and company. This book earned every bit of its 5 🌟! Everybody knows at least a little something about the Alex Murdaugh case, right? Well, I'm ashamed to say I live barely an hour from where this all happened and I knew very little about the case. But, after reading this book, I now consider myself an expert  😀 I was so totally engrossed in the story, which was told like a novel, that I couldn't  get through it fast enough! The author did an incredible job of synthesizing all of the information she learned and observed into a riveting account of the entire Murdaugh family. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has even the slightest interest in this case.

4.5 stars rounded up. Really well done. I appreciate that the flaws in the investigation were not held back either trying to present some unbiased reporting.

Thoroughly engaging and detailed investigative journalism. The author does a masterful job weaving together her resources and observations to create a portrait of a chilling narcissist.

The backstory is as interesting as the recent Murdaugh cases. The author’s research reveals how an Alex Murdaugh comes to be. Alex was fourth generation in a line of low country lawyers who held sway over their community. Alex’s younger son Paul seemed cut from the same cloth but lacking the academic chops of previous generations.

What’s well known is that Murdaugh was accused and convicted of killing his wife and younger son. How he got to that point is fascinating. This is a complicated piece of investigative journalism.

I didn't think I could loath the Murdaughs any more after listening to Mandy Matney's Podcast about the Murdaughs hold over South Carolina's low country.

I was wrong.

This book dives deep into the impact of four generations of Murdaughs, each generation worse than the last, and ending in at least a double homicide and millions in stolen client funds.

I learned that in addition to being a narcissistic sociopath and addict, Alex is also truly a weird person. He drank Capri Sun so frequently that one was left IN THE GUN ROOM ON THE NIGHT OF THE MURDERS.

My only nit is that Bauerlein alludes to Matney & Co.'s investigation into the death of Steven Smith, but doesn't mention her by name, which I found odd, but maybe my obsessive True Crime Podcast listening has skewed my perspective.
