It’s not bad but if you have read or watched more than one book or documentary about contemporary China’s rise in the last 20 years you have seen all this book has to say without reading. Kan has nothing insightful or original to say about China or Chinese millennials. I really could only take so much  “oh poor brainwashed docile chinese people” before it started getting irritating.

I have mixed feelings about this book--on one hand, it's a pretty great overview of recent Chinese history, and a detailed look into the life of a Chinese woman born in the countryside in 1988. Comparing her situation with my own was enlightening. On the other hand, the second half of the book tends more towards a discussion of her love life, which I just didn't find as interesting. Some quibbles with her history, which tends to be pretty generalized, and I found her prose only decent. However, overall it still offers a really interesting insight into recent Chinese history as experienced by the average person. Must read for anyone living in China.

There were some interesting bits about growing up in a one child policy China and its impact on the well being of children and citizens, but overall this paled in comparison to the memoir I read just previous to this

A fascinating memoir that, despite its direct, simplistic writing style, provides an engaging in-depth view of growing up in China from the perspective of a Chinese millennial.
