It was easy to get things jumbled listening to the audio. I got the big picture but there are so many names of the different groups I got confused at times. It's a fine story but for some reason it feels like something is missing, a bit empty.

3.5 stars. I didn’t enjoy this as much as The Gilded Ones. The violence became too much for me, and there were times when it became too melodramatic.

The overall story is well detailed, and the world building is incredible. It is intricately woven. The characters are likable and engaging, for me, it was just the amount of violence, and some over emotional scenes that made me a bit cringey.

In this follow up to The Gilded Ones, our main character Deja has to contend with the Gilded Ones/Mothers continued quest to regain power over Otera, the threats that persist from a longstanding enemy, and the full dark truth of their history and reign, and her own role in disrupting things. We see Deja grow in her own power and understanding, confronting these challenges alongside her alaki/deathshriek kin and their uruni companions. It’s an action packed and twisty book from beginning to end, with so many new revelations I’m honestly still grappling with. Excited for the final stage and Deja’s continued elevation in this battle of gods.

SO much potential and excitement going into this after having just finished The Gilded Ones, yet SO much "... what?" by the time I realized how deep I was. In fact, I think I spent most of the page-turns in this book going "... wait, what?", and for as much as I loved The Gilded Ones, I really had to force myself to finish The Merciless Ones. So many things are done or mentioned once and then never again that it makes your head spin (
Spoilerlike Deka and Ixa doing their psuedo-ingolo body-sharing once and then NEVER AGAIN???
), and I had trouble really following where the plot was going a lot of the time. All of the weird sticky residue and paper streaks from repeatedly slapping on and then ripping back off the "GOOD GUY" and "BAD GUY" stickers got in the way of actually seeing the storyline.

I maintain that Britta is the heart of this saga, and I find myself caring so much more about her than about Deka. I need more Britta, all the time, always. The Gilded Ones was still a great read, but The Merciless Ones just doesn't hit the same for me.
