An amazing book that I enjoyed very much, although it took me a long time to finish it. Sometimes I had trouble focusing on the descriptions.

Ken Kesey has all the marks of a beatnik writer, but with complete self awareness to how reality looks from the sane man’s view. Loved the movie; love the book as well.

I will say that this book is a bit of a slow read throughout the beginning. It takes off at the very end though and truly makes it a worth it read. This book has a very interesting feeling to it. It's lighthearted at times, yet shocking and depressing at others. It reveals so many flaws in people and the way we treat others. Thoughout the book, Ken Kesley reveals the truth of how far just a little courage can go and it's so fascinating. The ending of this book is really a horrible but truthful and amazing ending. Amazingly done.

This book really blew me away. The main theme throughout of people trying to impose order over the chaos of humanity I think is still really relevant today in every aspect of society; especially in the way we try to “manage” human beings. The narration from Chief’s point of view instead of McMurphy’s really adds to the story because we get to see the duality not only of the mentally ill being brutalized and treated harshly for being outside the norm, but Native American peoples being treated this way by white settlers. McMurphy’s charisma and easy going attitude in the face of Nurse Ratched’s rigidity and sternness really fed my enjoyment of people defying authority. All in all this is a poignant novel on systems of control and the cruelty shown towards marginalized groups wrapped up in an entertaining and moving package.
