After finishing Perrotta's "Little Children", I rushed to the bookstore to pick up another one of his books. I decided to go with this collection of short stories set in the 1970's. All of the stories follow a central character, but are not necessarily related, although all deal with a boy coming of age in New Jersey.
I think my favorite story was the last in the collection, about the death of the boy's neighbor and his duty as pallbearer. It was touching.
Most of the stories were a blend of poignant and funny. Perrotta does a great job with subtle observations. Overall, this is a really good collection.

This book is esentially Boyhood in a written form, set in the '70s. It's about a kid without any personality growing up in an era that we think of with nostalgia. And somehow, I still loved it.

Tom Perrotta’s writing simply resonates for me. This collection of short stories is an easy yet compelling read. He captures awkward moments excellently with a voice that is humble and has an everyman quality. If you grew up in the 70s and 80s this book will be an especially interesting romp. This was a nice little bargain find in half price books waiting to find out how little I would get for 2 boxes of books - $8.83.

This was a great collection of short stories...easy to read and funny. They are great "coming of age" stories about a boy named Buddy throughout the 70's and Perrotta does a good job of telling those stories.
