The Sea of Monsters

Doesn't hold up well over the years... the writing, while humorous, is really linear and the characters don't really go anywhere besides following half-baked prophecies and arbitrary episodics. I do think the first half is well-paced, but the mundanity and non-development in the second half really drags this one down. The Lightning Thief felt much more tied to Percy's character than the Sea of Monsters, which had even less Grover than I remembered from my youth. This one I can see myself skipping if I were to reread the series again (this is the first time I've reread any of them apart from Thief).

P.S. What I mean by linear is a paraphrased passage of the book: "I walked up to the mast. I slammed my sword down on the monster coming down. I knew I had to get up. I swung around to the left and got up and surprised it." Percy's principal narration is not nearly as humorous as his side quips, and it makes for really dull, plodding descriptions of action. His actions are thus not nearly as exciting as they should be, given that the set pieces are borrowed straight from Odysseus.

This is my least favorite if the original series, I don't really know why! Actually, it didn't help that my copy got stolen in school once so I was always annoyed when I thought about it LOL and since I never bothered to get a new copy, it's the one I've reread the least as I tend to just skip it. Still, I personally resonated with it the least. Not bad by any means, however!

the plot twist cliffhanger at the end of this book is the BLUEPRINT. still hits the same at 23

The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan

This is another installment from the Percy Jackson series. It's just as fun and quick as the first one, bringing back old foes as well as new ones. They're a great set of books and I can't wait to read the next one.
