Amanda does no wrong. I relate to so much of what she writes. This poetry book is no exception. The topics of losing a parent, having a less than ideal mother, changing and growing through your trauma, and loving your sister because she’s a part of everything you’ve ever done and everywhere you’ve ever been resonated with me deeply.

Amanda explores a topic many people tend to avoid - a mother-and-daughter relationship. She expresses the effects of trauma and grief her mother has caused her, both through her mother's actions and death. The emotion is so raw and vulnerable that it is hard not to understand where her essence draws from.

I think this book would be hard to read if the reader was unable to relate to these topics [read: you probably need mommy issues or motherhood trauma to fully get immersed in it] but I think it is a nice read for anyone. As someone with a rough relationship with her mother (who also has cancer), the book made me feel seen and let me know that there is some sort of universal experience - despite how sad it is to say.

For fans of: Rupi Kaur

When checking my book-haul from Christmas, I came across this poetry book hidden at the back of a shelf. I hadn't thought much of it in the store: just that the name and the blurb interested me.

The poetry itself is free verse, and styles itself a lot like Kaur's 'Milk and Honey'. The topic that drew me in: emotional child abuse. The poems delve into the emotional struggle of a child pulled between loving and hating a parent that abuses. The poetry hit a few personal nerves, I had to put it down to get a hot chocolate.

I love the emotional journey and following the constant inner struggle. I think it perfectly encapsulates the feeling of wanting a parent to be better than they were, and struggling to cope with the intense emotion following a loved one's death.

I am biased: but I appreciate what it stands for.
