I love kitty cats don't get me wrong, but I don't think I found this intriguing enough. I loved this graphic novel about a traveling cat that I personally liked better, but I think it's because there was imagry to go with it and it felt more adventurous, but maybe I didn't read enough and I'll go back :/

A book written by a Japanese author involving a cat? We all know it's going to be a tear-jerker going in. Yet I still decided to do this to myself. And yup, it had me feeling all the feels- but not in the way I expected.

4.5

Calling all cat lovers, this one is for you! The Travelling Cat Chronicles tells the story of Satoru and his rescued a d beloved cat, Nana, who is named after the Japanese character for seven because his tail hooks to the left. Yup Satoru knows it is a silly name and it eventually becomes a running joke through the story. Even Nana pokes fun at Satoru because he tells everyone the origin story of the name to anyone who will listen. Which by the way, if you needed even more of a reason to read a novel about a cat, Nana’s inner monologue is totally hilarious and on point to cat culture. If you love cats, you’ll understand 100% (sooo good!)

The story follows Satoru and Nana as they travel throughout Japan visiting old friends that Satoru met during different phases of life. Each chapter is fairly long with multiple sections breaks to toggle between past and present. The last quarter of the book was really good, however, I have to say the ending was phenomenal! If you want a tearjerker, this one is for you! (Don’t worry,
Nana doesn’t die if that’s what are worried about).

Note of caution though - First, the story begins with Nana as a stray who is hit by a car and sustains injuries. Obviously, Nana survives otherwise there wouldn’t be a story. Second, involves a character dying of cancer. Probably wouldn’t recommend this one to anyone impacted by cancer.

The Travelling Cat Chronicles was almost a 3.5 star review up until the last quarter. The book moved into 4 star territory, however it was the ending that really pushed the novel to be rated at 4.5. Absolutely a beautiful ending that wasn't rushed nor unsatisfying.

Favorite Parts-
  • Nana teaching the orange tabby.
  • Nana’s inner monologue.
  • Satoru’s love of cats.
  • The ending!!!

Random Tidbits!
  • Translated from Japanese.
  • Made into a movie in 2018! (I hope to watch soon)
