Not your average book of poetry.
For the girls that made collages and had issues with their parents. 
For girls that retreated inside themselves and clawed their way back.
This book broke me and put me back together. Reminded me where I came from and gave me hope for where I am going.

 i was going to say i hope trista writes about persephone next, then i saw the ending. i'm going to love that one.

this was good. i think i enjoyed aphordite better. a solid 4.25 stars

Trista has such a way with words and these pieces are so beautiful yet saddening and relatable (please check cw). The way photo’s and collages were mixed into the written pieces just added so much to it and I would 100% get some of these as prints. I got Aphrodite made me do it on impulse a while ago and was very excited for this one and it surely didn’t let down, I will be patiently waiting for the continuation of this series!

Got email confirmation that I had been sent an e-ARC of this, and immediately dropped what I was doing to read it (jk, I was in the bath, where I remained - but I did immediately start reading it in the tub, which I recommend: poetry + a bath is peak).

Trista Mateer's Aphrodite Made Me Do It is a poetry collection that I have found myself returning to ever since I read it, even though I only first read it a few months ago. In retrospect, it absolutely is one of my favourite poetry collections, and Artemis absolutely continues that legacy, if not surpasses it. Do yourself a favour and pick up Mateer's work.

It hurts to rip open wounds
and reset bones.

It hurts to dig around inside
and see what's going on.

It hurts to realize how deeply
you have betrayed yourself over the years.

Healing will never be convenient.

Artemis Made Me Do It is about what it’s like being a woman (or a femme presenting person) in a male-centric, patriarchal world; it discusses the trials and tribulations of our experiences, but also the importance and necessity of fighting back. 

 

Mateer alternates between telling her own story and telling Artemis’s and this choice establishes a sort of sisterhood between them and the reader because all parties understand each other and want the best for the collective. Through these words it’s as though Trista and Artemis will sit and cry with you for as long as you need, but they will also pick you up, dry your tears, and hand you the arrows to take down whatever or whoever made you feel stripped of your power and they will fight alongside you until you get it back. 

 

I loved this collection; the writing and the aesthetic were gorgeous and I felt seen all throughout. Mateer had put into words my anger and my questions and my fears and that showed me that I am not alone in feeling these things. I hope the people who need that, too, find this book.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an electronic ARC in exchange for an honest review. 
This was beautiful. I loved it just as much as Aphrodite Made Me Do It. It means so much that the author includes content warnings right at the start, especially since so much of her work deals with trauma and SA. This is poetry for the queer, wild, strange woman/ femme aligned who have had enough of being held down, subdued, forced to obey. The use of the art and the way the author intertwines modern day and mythology in an devotional way is so unique. This is poetry about hurting, healing, survival. Fighting back, reclaiming yourself. Finding the wild and feral parts of yourself and nurturing them.  Empowerment and rage intertwined.
This collection also felt even more imbued with magic and witchy elements. 
I can't wait to see what Trista Mateer releases next.
