An interesting spin on common fantasy tropes. Violet as a protagonist is enjoyable, as are the general beats of the story, but I'm not wholly sold on the romance - we'll see how I feel come book 2. However, the homophobic jokes felt very out of place, even if they were immediately criticized, and the novel very much could have done without them and it was a really poor way of telling the reader a character was (or might be, since it was never actually confirmed) gay.
