Very interesting world building and the romance going from enemies to lovers was a fun ride!

I had such high hopes for this book and they just all fell flat.

The realist main character was such a nice touch and I loved the more snarky side of her. And the way her relationship with Cyrus was introduced was fantastic. Like it as going to be a fun enemies to lovers.

But all the bloody back and forth. It was exhausting. And there came a point where there was no spark between the characters, they just wanted to get their jollies off.

And while there was a plot, I found it extremely weak. Like Violet almost never told the future, regardless of the fact she’s the damn Seer. And this whole cursed prophecy thing didn’t make much sense. Then you get to the other witch but… again the characters were just plodding along thumbs up their asses 90% of the time it felt like.

This was an interesting new world, definitely great for anyone who loves fairytale or royalty themed fantasy. It definitely gives off The Cruel Prince vibes, so that is a great readalike. The characters aren't necessarily the most likeable, but that's supposed to be the point. They both will do whatever it takes to further their status in society.

The central romance might have been the best thing about this book. There is a lot of court intrigue, but sometimes I had difficulty following it. This might have been becuase I listened to the audiobook, though. The narrator was great, but sometimes I don't pay quite as close attention, so maybe I missed something plotwise.

While I don't think this necessarily needed to be a series, I do understand where the author wants to go with the story. I am kind of interested in seeing what happens next, so I might pick up the next book when it comes out. We'll see!

It took me a while to get into this, but I really enjoyed the last third and am eager to see what happens next. The love-hate relationship between the two main characters is well done with plenty of tension. The other characters are also interesting enough. Story of fate and what happens when you fight against it.

Not perfect, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book (much more than The Cruel Prince). I’d also say it’s great for fans of The Belles and Little Thieves, with scheming court machinations, arranged marriages, and twisty prophecies. Violet is believably prickly, and Cyrus makes a dashingly slimy Prince Charming. Spicier than I prefer my YA, but those instances were plot relevant. Great debut, and I’m looking forward to the sequel.

A middle of the road debut YA fantasy that’s not anywhere near as engaging as the books that its been compared to.
