"Middlesex" is one of my favorite books that I read in 2004. I love Eugenide's writing. The story of Calliope the hermaphrodite and the history of her Greek family was unlike most of the other tales that I read that year.

This book is amazing and I can't even try to explain it. I love the family background and history of the Stephanides family. And Callie/Cal is a fantastic character. The writing made this 530 page book so easy to read, even with inordinate amounts of detail. Can't wait to read The Marriage Plot by Eugenides.

Beautiful story that transcends generations, genders, cities, and nationalities. Full of complex characters you cannot not fall in love with. The very witty beautiful writing of his can only be matched by few, both living and dead.

This is not a novel, it's an epopee! At times I felt like the narration was a bit too dragged out, but it's overall very well done and I enjoyed the read very much!

So I finally finished reading this book, and all I can think is, "Thank God." It was so long (only a mere 529 pages, but it droned on for just as many pages) so I was so thankful that it was done. I'm one of those people who needs to finish a book regardless of how much I dislike it. I just need closure. And that is what I have finally achieved with Middlesex.

I was disappointed as this book was recommended to me by one of my literary-loving friends who I share a great deal of books in common with (no, he's not on Goodreads - yet). But I guess we can't all love the same books all the time. Apparently this book was also part of Oprah's book club this year. I didn't see any of the episodes where she mentioned it, so I'm curious to see what she and her guests thought of the book.

Anyway, I would not want to read this book again although I am glad that I was able to finish it. I might recommend it to someone who has a lot on their mind and doesn't mind reading a story without a story.

This was good. An interesting story well told. It didn't really address gender differences as much as I expected/hoped. But, I like Cal. I would enjoy having coffee or a drink with him.

Overall, I enjoyed this novel but did not love it. It starts out slow and the whole first half seems disconnected from the overall story. I think it could have been summarized in a chapter. Mostly, I am disappointed because the book left lots of loose ends and ends on a sad note.

i love love loved the first third, I’m not sure what to make of the rest — Cal’s gender identity decision felt rushed and underdeveloped, and it’s such a crucial aspect of the book and character, it felt incomplete and weirdly reliant on stereotypes of binary gender. idk; friends, let me know ur thoughts if you read it.
