DID NOT FINISH: 11%

This book has absolutely no redeeming qualities. At least other “bad” books (like Twilight) have some sort of redemption in its characters or entertainment value. The first four Vampire Diaries books were also awful but entertaining. This one is downright horrendous. Every character is stripped of all personality (I mean did they even have one to begin with?) and are basically cardboard cutouts of what they were in books 1-4. The plot and world building makes no sense and I don’t care enough to try and figure it out. The writing is somewhat improved but it seems like someone completely different is writing it. My biggest issue is regarding the ending of book 4:

At the end of book 4 Elena is brought back to life (how, I’m not sure. The power of friendship?) and is basically an Angel (?) who can’t speak or do anything. In the beginning of Book 5, you find out Stefan has her locked up in an attic and is taking care of her because she can’t do anything on her own. This is as far as I got before DNF because what the actual hell.
dark funny inspiring lighthearted mysterious sad tense

You are probably as surprised with this rating as me.
I came into this books with my snark guns on, disgust face prepped and my nonsense tolerance high.

It really wasn't that bad, I mean the innocent spirit baby Elena was dumb but it was pretty fine to me.
It also could have been far, far shorter apart from that it was okay.
The characters are nice but I am really not feeling Delena, I mean I loved TV show Selena but in the books, I am grossed out by it. Bamon in the books is much better

The villains never felt all that threatening too but I sort of liked them.

I also feel like we should get more explanation of the concept of Elena's wings powers but at least she is no longer completely dependent on the Vampire brothers.

Elena, Meredith and Bonnie friendship was sweet and adorable.

All in all I enjoyed it and I will be reading the nest book in the series.

This book drove me a little crazy. Elena returns from the dead as a pure, child like angel? I wasn't buying it. So I almost lost interest and gave up on the book. Then she slowly started coming back and was . . . more like the Elena we know from the television series. Then Damon came along and was overtaken by an evil demonic parasite, controlled by a pair of kitsune spirit foxes. Basically, he was being a real jerk. Caroline is still a pain in the butt in the books, trying to hurt Elena, and this time she's in league with the kitsune (and supposedly pregnant . . . ). And Stefan is missing. I almost lost interest again until the trees in the Old Wood decided to attack Matt's old beater car.

In short, I think the book did what it was supposed to do. It continued the story of the characters we've come to know and enjoy in The Vampire Diaries series. I liked that it incorporated something we haven't seen in the television show – the kitsune fox twins who imprison their prey in snow globes and let them wander in circles. It was strange but at least it was different and interesting. Each time my attention and interest drifted enough to make me question why I was still reading this book, and this series, the author drew me right back in again. It worked rather like a soap opera, which more or less is what the TV version is, so it definitely fits in with the rest of the series. Ultimately, my curiosity is piqued enough that I'm going to head to the library for the next book in the series. Let's see what happens next to the humans and supernatural beings in Fell's Church.

For some reason these books just don’t do it for me. There’s always way too much going on and it makes the plot laughable. Elena comes back from the dead and towards the end of the book she has butterfly wings and all these other types of wings. It just makes the story confusing and overwhelming over how much happens at once.
