The reviews for this book are extremely mixed, there was even a controversy on Amazon over it. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to say that I was extremely disappointed with this book. Having read the previous four books in 'The Vampire Diaries' series I assumed that this book was going to be excellent, sadly I was wrong. It appears to me that over the seventeen year break between 'Dark Reunion' and 'Nightfall', LJ Smith lost her touch, which is understandable giving that seventeen years is a heck of a long time. Nightfall did not live up to the expectations and is way below the bar that the previous four books have set.
By 'Nightfall', I believe that the plot had just become rather ridiculous. Elena had undergone so many changes (human to vampire to dead to spirit to human) that the plot had become even more unrealistic. No one character can possibly go through that many life changes in such a short space of time.
'Nightfall' got off to a very slow start and I found it difficult to get back into the series. For a lot of the first part of the book Elena is just trying to get back to human self and has to essentially relearn everything from how to walk to talk to act and it's all rather boring and sappy as Stefan mollycoddles Elena and Elena overstretches herself. The plot doesn't kick off until around half way through and even then it's all very repetitive. I didn't think that the characters were very well developed in this book and there wasn't a lot of substance. This book was considerably longer than any of it's predecessors, it's probably about twice the length, and consequently, twice the rambling and irrelevant information. Stefan, a main character, was AWOL, inexplicably for the majority of this book and even by the end of it the reader is left confused as to what has happened to him. Stefan is not the only mystery. If I'm perfectly honest, I haven't got a clue what was going on at the end of this book despite the fact that I finished reading it only a couple of short hours ago. The story did not finish, but it was not the sort of cliffhanger that the reader likes, it was just loose ends that needed to be tied up.
The imagery in the story reminds me a lot of 'The Exorcist' or 'Splice' as many of the town's people become possessed by 'malachs'. They then proceed to do weird and disgusting things, but again there is little explanation. There are two new characters, the two troublemakers, but I didn't understand their motives at all. It is quite a long book and it's taken me quite a long time to read it because frankly I just kept getting bored and drifting away from it. Thinking back, I really don't remember all that much happening throughout. The climax is very near to the end but the problem with this is that a. most people are so bored by then, they really don't care and b. it wasn't worth the wait. I know that a lot of people will disagree with me as many think that this is an excellent book, but I am sorely disappointed and I don't feel like I want to read the two subsequent novels.
All in all, this book does not live up to the expectations that were set by the previous four books and I wouldn't recommend you read it. Don't let this book spoil your memories of the first four (excellent) books.

Ok, here's the thing.
i think that L J Smith was out of this world for too long. There was too big of a gap between writing the first books, and writing this latest one, and I don't think that she could get back into the flow of the characters.
This book was drawn out, boring, long and kind of really pointless. A lot of things happened that were completely unneccesary, and I was confused for a vast majority of the novel, not knowing if what was going on was actually real, or if it was all part of an illusion. Also, the flipping back and forth between Damon being evil, Damon being possessed, and Damon actually being a total sweetheart with a shell of protection seemed completely unrealistic, even for a vampire novel.
Overall, this book was a major disappointment.

So, the original Vampire Diaries trilogy (and the fourth one) were my favorite books when I was 12. So when I learned there was a new sequel, I RAN out and bought it. Unfortunately, L.J. Smith forgot how to write between the two series. If the influence of Twilight on Teen Vampire Books is going to be completely hideous writing, I weep for the future. There were so many issues with this book between horrible plot pacing, overwrought prose, ruining of characters, and anti-feminist ideas that it made me want to scream. Unfortunately, I'll probably be back for more. If only to see if Damon and Bonnie ever get together. Grr. This is blatant money grubbing. And someone needs to whack the glitter off L.J. Smith's ass, quick.
While I really like the characters and think that the concept itself has a lot of potential, I can't say that I cared much for this book in the series.
It's a rather odd story and what they did with Elena in the beginning of it was just... strange. I can see what it was she was trying to do with it, but it just didn't work and I'm sorry to say that my 3 stars are only because I really like the characters, but definitely not in this book (which is in the same vein for me as Breaking Dawn in the Twilight saga, which makes me think of bad fanfiction).
Sorry to L.J. Smith, but the magic just wasn't there in this one.

A very bad fanfic that's hardly coherent and... well, compared to the original four books was a trainwreck.
SO disappointing! I wish I could ask the author WHAT she was thinking! She uses the exact same template from the first two books, which is really annoying: characters in love, bad guy comes, try to defeat bad guy, think they might not do it, burst of sudden power and they think they've killed the bad guy, then something is revealed that everything might not be solved afterall. It's like she's trying to trick the reader, thinking that we might not notice if she does the same thing... Ugh.
Slightly more interesting than the previous portion of the series. I can't deny that the writing was so poorly written it was incredible- and many of the plot points were so poorly thought out, they were insensible- but if I just took this for what it was, with zero expectations, I was able to enjoy this one leaps and bounds above the previous four.
Really liked the bit of Delena action, and completely unrelated to any of this, I was surprised and pleased to learn about all the multiple-tailed foxes I always see on Pinterest.
Also, knocked up Caroline? Despite her being a complete bitch, I am curious. I would really like to see her turn into something more than a completely unbalanced psycho.

This series was written over ten years later than the previous books, and a lot has changed. More supernatural entities have entered Mystic Falls, and they are more powerful than vampires. Elena's new form is hilarious and extremely powerful. I kept wondering what she was truly capable of. At first, she does not have a firm grip on her sanity, but she gets it back right before embarking on a dangerous mission to save Fell's Church yet again.
This book was seriously weird, and odd, and weird again. It was all over the place and things coming back to life, and japanese fox spirits. I'll write a full review later, when I've worked out the book in my head.
