(I had this marked as a book I read a long time ago, and apparently remembered it as a 4-star read, but I don’t know how that’s possible as I am reasonably sure I found it confusing and never finished it. Trying again, now as an adult more able to parse the language and more familiar with the Mabinogion.)

This book was... odd. And I'm one who likes odd, so that can be a very good thing. In this case... I can't decide.

I loved the atmosphere. LOVED. I loved how this book made me feel. The mystery, the sense of sinister awe, the broader history circling around the characters... I adored it. But the writing was choppy. Quite choppy. And difficult to really tell what was happening. It took me half the book to figure out what the relationships all were between the people living in this house, for example, and there are a lot of things I still don't understand. That can be fine, I don't need everything explained--but I feel like most things, even mundane day-to-day things, were skipped over too quickly to make enough sense.

I don't know. I may have to reread it to fully appreciate it. Because there's definitely something their to appreciate. But... for now, I just don't know.

(Also, there are not as many owls in the book as the cover may lead you to believe.)

Messed up, surreal, and...flat. One of those books where the heavy lifting is on the reader.
