I can't stop thinking about Precious Stones (The first story) by Erika Kobayashi. I won't gush on an on but I love the fact that the story is about gem stones and the form of the story itself if faceted. Scenes reflect themselves through mirrored events and characters with beautiful symmetry. It's one of those stories where I sat back and thought "well fuck, i'm never going to be able to write anything this good."

The somewhat broader theme of this collection was a bit of a challenge for me -- I never quite knew what I was getting from one story/piece to the next, and it never quiiiite added up to what the jacket copy promises... but who cares? New writing (to English readers) from around the world is always a great buy, and some of the work in here is truly terrific.
