This is a hard series to rate. I LOVED the first two books, and was quickly connected to Jon Snow, Arya, Ned, and Catelyn. But after book 2, things went downhill for me. The story line DRAGGED on, and there was way too much time devoted to characters with which I could not connect. Book 5 was the worst offender for me, since the majority of it was devoted to Daenerys and her dragon thing. I just want to know what's going on at the wall! I don't care about Dany and the myriad of characters that sort of run together in my head. I sure hope book 6 will focus more on The Others and those dedicating their lives to defending the wall!

These books were a whole journey and took me a lot longer than I thought they would to get through. Overall, George R.R. Weaves a masterful narrative managing to get rich detail and character development into a large cast all without somehow compromising the overarching story taking place in Westeros and beyond. Even the characters I hated I loved to hate and was honestly surprised that Jaime Lannister, my least favourite character, managed to claw his way into one of my favourites of all time. Martin’s writing is incredible and Ill be patiently waiting for the next installment however long that will take.

I've reviewed these separately but I thought I'd review the current published works of ASOIAF as a set.

These are among the best books that I have ever read and I am eagerly awaiting Winds of Winter.

It's a lot. If you're not prepared for gore, incest, murder, betrayal, and all sorts of other intense things then you may not want to read this series. But it is, by far, one of my favorite series. The plot, the character development, and the world building are all at a completely different level than most other books.
