The Hike was both riveting and bizarre. I found myself going back to it much like you would to a strange dream trying to suss out more details and failing. In the end the book was satisfying and strangely frustrating. An exercise in fascinating contradictions.
Decent ending.
Didn’t feel worth the trip to get there, which might be ironic in the meta.
There’s always the possibility that there’s much more here than I’m fully understanding.

Fun and light. It drags a bit (somewhat intentionally) but I liked the ending a lot.
This Oz-like trip down memory lane feels like a mix between one man’s years of therapy and one life-changing LSD trip he’s still talking about half a lifetime later. Through all of its snarky surreality, Magary hides some real emotional punches and life lessons that feels like maybe came from years of therapy. Or an acid trip.
An absolutely bonkers and wild ride of a story. The wizard of oz on even more crack. Highly recommend if you want to be both disgusted and laughing at the same time
I’ve read this book at least 7 times, it’s my absolute favorite. It’s just so weird and out there but for whatever reason it works. The protagonist and all of the characters are super like-able. It leaves you wanting more and wondering what other people’s “hikes” would look like. I wish there were sequels/other books set in the same universe.
This book was sort of crazy and tough to get into, but the middle part was great, and the last few sentences made it worth reading, so I recommend pushing through based on that!

One of the greatest and most bizarre things I've ever read at the same time. Start reading and you won't be able to put it down. I read it in a single sitting. Going into it knowing nothing is the best way to go.
The ending was so perfectly executed. It's one of those mysteries where you figure out what's about to happen right when the author wants you to. It's both satisfying and hits hard ashe and his wife have that moment of recognition of which they can never speak.

I'll say 3 1/2 stars. (Come on, Goodreads! Give us half star rating ability already.) For me, this did not start well at all. If it wasn't for it being a book club selection, I may have stopped listening early on. Glad I stuck with it. The second half was much better in my opinion.
