All of the characters were fantastic. The plot was crazy (your jaw will drop). Writing that is simple to read (believe me, I'm dyslexic). Medium spiciness. I finishe it in a week, which is unusual for me because I was so consumed in the novel.I would HIGHLY recommend

I won't lie I read this in like 4ish hours, I was somehow hooked and could not put it down. I would pay attention to the content warnings though.
The book majorly sped up on the last 50%, the first 50% was still good though!

This book does have its issues which I'll try to sum up:
  • Alex is kinda stalkerish and gives off creepy vibes. Even more so in the last 50%
  • The singing scene was... uncomfortable to read.
  • This book is leaning quite heavily on the fact you would read the next one, this can't be read as a stand-alone.
  • At times to me it felt like I was reading a Twilight fanfiction.

so towards the end it had a somewhat predictable, crazy turns and twists. so 4 stars for that but it is most likely sure to make you feel negative at points but also warm and fuzzy inside. i enjoyed it. i'm glad i read it and that’s all that matters :) cast was diverse but in a way that’s still white centered, if that makes sense lol like no dark skinned black characters. mostly eurocentric and asian (chinese) cast. glad it wasn’t just a plain white cast and we had some different ethnicities.

it’s a good she falls first, he falls harder. which is my fave trope. he is obsessed with her fairly quick. also love. read this for your classic cold hearted MMC who becomes obsessed with the FMC who is fairly happy and but has a dark childhood. i couldn’t put it down and read it in like 2-3 days! <3

I picked this book up because I seemed to be in a bit of a romance kick and I knew that this whole series is available on Kindle Unlimited at the moment so easy to binge. I had heard that this book is the weakest in the series and many people seem to suggest just skipping this book altogether so I went in with low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised by this book for the most part as it is a relatively standard romance with the melodrama just a step above normal. For the vast majority of the book, I was really vibing with it and I didn't even mind the third act breakup as it didn't feel overly manufactured and wasn't grounded in miscommunication.
Alex and Ava definitely could have hammered things out with a conversation but that also didn't match their characters, especially as they were both carrying a lot of childhood trauma.

What I didn't enjoy about this book was the third act when the characters were in London. This portion was just the wrong length; it either needed to be shorter and just be an extended epilogue or it needed to be more fleshed-out and show us
the steps that Alex took to win Ava back. Their return to being a couple did not feel earned as we didn't see their journey.
It is wholly possible that we see portions of this period of time in other characters' books but as a self-contained story, the resolution felt rushed and somewhat meh.

Despite the weak ending, I mostly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to continuing the series.

Favourite quote:

She felt like heaven to my hell, the closest I'd ever get to salvation, and yet I still wanted to drag her into the depths of Hades with me.

I've heard a lot abt this series on booktok. I was told Alex is 'better' in the other books, that the smut is incredible spicy basically that I would love it.

Seeing as this is my first ana huang book I can't say anything about the rest of the series but I'm not of to a great start lol

I hated how much I wanted her, and I hated that she wasn’t smart enough to run away from me while she still had a chance.
Though let’s be honest, it was already too late.
She was mine. She just didn’t know it yet.

This is not a bad book but the hype on booktok made me expect more than it is. The talk about the spice made me expect something bdsm (d/s) or at least filthy smut but it was more spicy vanilla. The book talks about some heavy themes but I would put it on the low spectrum of dark from my personal reading experience.

So cold and uncaring to the world, yet so warm and protective when he wanted to be. I’d known him for eight years, yet I hadn’t known him at all.
He wasn’t the man I thought he was. He was so much better, even when he tried to convince me he was worse, and I wanted him like nothing before. Not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. I wanted every shadow of his soul and every piece of his beautiful, multilayered heart. I wanted to pour into him every drop of light I had to give until he consumed me whole. Until I was his, and he was mine.

Now to the characters

Did you find the characters loveable?

Well even though Alex the love interest does some really fucked up stuff. The writing made it. . . Extremely forgivable,  relatable almost but I didn't experience the same for ava in the writing. Which made it hard for me to sympathize, forgive or forget the stuff she did.

Talking abt what Alex did would spoil wayyy to much but I want to elaborate what I thought abt ava, reading the book.

So the book basically starts with Alex being a completly emotionles ass. He was described a robot at some point. So Ava and her friends decide to do an experiment.
They called it the "OE" (Operation emotion) basically testing him for various emotions for their own enjoyment.  Which I believe is extremely toxic. People do and don't do stuff for reasons. We shouldn't test them for our own enjoyment. This Operation is the start of how the two get closer but no where in the book is it written that she confesses what she did. As if it wasn't wrong of her to do that. Meanwhile for every single thing Alex does wrong he needs to apologize and grovel. Ik a lot of authors do that but I really dislike it if not everyone in a relationship is equally held accountable for their wrong doings.
Their also other things which made me not immediately like her but this was the main thing seeing as this started everything.
All this is not to say that what she did is at the same lvl of what Alex did but like I said the book never mentioned her confessing what she did and therefore being held accountable in apologizing for what she did. Not that I think Alex would have been mad she can't do anything wrong in his eyes.

“I’d do anything for you. No matter how twisted or impossible.”

This book involves ⬇️
Grumpy x Sunshine ✔️
Neighbors ✔️
Possessive mmc ✔️

I wanted to keep her here, safe and cherished, forever. Fuck the rest of the world. It could burn for all I cared.

Enjoy 👀✨️
