Woo hoo! I finished a book on Leap Day! (I don't know why that excites me.)

Anyway, I heard about Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch through The Nerdy Book Club. I hadn't heard of it and thought I'd check it out from the library. I had to ILL it and the book that arrived looked like what I would pull off my great-grandmother's bookshelf. Seriously. Oldest library book ever!

The story was about a poor widow and her children. They struggle to survive but keep their chins up and manage to be ok. They never really get much money, but they never lose their spirit or take anything for granted. It's a story probably a lot of people could benefit from reading.

I had a copy of this book before and somehow had gotten rid of it; then I found another copy in our local used book store with a wonderful inscription, and Chris kindly bought it for me, knowing my weakness for old children's books featuring cabbages in their titles. (No, really. If you haven't read Nobody Plays With a Cabbage by Meindert de Jong, you really should.) This is a wonderful story about life in a simpler time and the power of community. It now has a place of honor on my shelves next to the aforementioned de Jong Cabbage Wonder.

I read it because of the film. I watched a lot of WC Fields movies as a kid. My parents have a bust of him.
