Despite the romance being hetero, I was fully invested by the end. Stellar storytelling here, and easy to follow the gaming action even as a more recreational, non pvp gamer-type.

Meep moop, sometimes books remind me why I don't read YA anymore.

3.5 stars. I would describe Don't Hate the Player as refreshingly zillennial, proof that the YA romance genre still has fresh angles to explore. The "teen speak" is accurate and genuinely funny as opposed to cringey. Sometimes the author tries a bit too hard to be witty but in the book's campiness it works.

Why the novel didn't work for me: the romance was super rushed and underdeveloped, the main characters could've been more nuanced and layered, and the story itself was very predictable. Also, the descriptions of players playing the video game were very, very detailed, which, if you don't know anything about gaming, can be extremely confusing at best or a slog to read through at worst. I play a few JRPGs so I am slightly more familiar with gaming technicalities but was still confused and couldn't picture/orient myself with a lot of the gaming scenes.

Lots of POCs and queer rep in this novel despite it being a straight romance. Diversity in the gaming world is brought up and explored, so it doesn't just feel like a "bonus." (I actually found myself more interested in the side characters bc the leads were a little stale.) And I love seeing the main guy defend trans rights (bc the bar for cis white straight men is in hell lol).
