There’s two wolves inside of me, one was really into this and the other was painfully aware of the author’s age at the time of writing about this 16 year old getting physical with a 21 year old (while constantly emphasising his age and the severe difference in their maturity)

This book is out now.

I had no idea what to expect when I requested two of Philippe Besson's backlist titles - In the Absence of Men and Lie to Me. I had never heard of the author nor of his books. But I've in the past enjoyed books that took place in the early 1900s that themes of sexuality during those times so this piqued my interest.

I had not looked at the text prior to reading but this book has no quotation marks. It has been awhile since I've read a book without quotation marks so that threw me for a loop at first.

"I love your skin, your smell, the life that pulses within you. I listen to you, but all I want to remember is your skin, your smell, the life that pulses within you. I know that being here in your arms is the most important thing. I know that nothing is more powerful than this; that war and forgetfulness can do nothing to destroy it."

The book is not a very long book but the way that Besson wrote made the book have such strong emotions. The main protagonist is Vincent, a 16 year old who meets Marcel an older man and they strike up a relationship. At the same time Vincent begins to have a secret romantic relationship with Arthur who is getting ready to leave for war. Arthur is struggling and worried about what will his fate be and is worried that Vincent is going to forget about him. There is a slight twist at the end that I had not seen coming but only made me want ask more questions.

I paired my reading with the audiobook. Ali Andre Ali is one of my favorite narrators so I was excited to see his name listed. He was able to bring the urgency in young Vincent's tone and even though there weren't quotes he was able to express the sadness Arthur was felling leading up to his departure.

If you are looking for a quick, romantic book set in the 1916s - give this one a read!

I don't feel the same strong impression as when i read "Lie With Me" after finishing this book.
The twist in the end is unpredictable and left me confused.
