Okay, time to fess up: this book took me like a year and a half to read. I read like 2/3 of it a year and a half ago, and for some unfathomable reason, I didn't pick it back up until yesterday. At any rate, please know that it is AMAZING. I love literally everything about it. Please check it out.
Labyrinth Lost's cover is so utterly reflective of the story, and vice versa, and both are entirely gorgeous.
Alex, the main character, is wonderful in a thousand ways. She goes on an epic emotional, physical, and magical journey that leaves her new, and better than she was before. It's really powerful to read about.
Rishi, her best friend, has her own brand of magic, despite her total humanity. She's funny, fierce, strong, and loyal to Alex, with unyielding love. I absolutely loved her.
Córdova uses vivid imagery in this book. I can picture every bit of Los Lagos, every single character, everything that happens so well, and I think that that really stood out to me about this book.
I also loved the culture of this book. It was diverse in a thousand different ways. It has brujas, Latina witches, and their magic and traditions. It has a bisexual main character. It has people from different backgrounds.
Labyrinth Lost also places a huge emphasis on family, which hit close to home for me, as family is also a big deal for me. I don't know what I would do without them, and this book makes you think and feel about that.
Oh, I also liked how there was a canto at the beginning of each chapter. It added a nice element to the book.
Overall? This book was one of my top ten reads this year, and I will reread it in the months and years to come. It has amazing characters, vivid imagery, wonderful emotional arcs, and a kickass plot with epic magic. 5 stars.

Spoiler
I wasn't sure who to ship Alex with, Rishi or Nova, or if I wanted her to not get with anyone at all. I liked both of them, and didn't prefer one over the other. But then Nova betrayed her, and Rishi really proved herself, too. I actually really love Rishi and Alex, and I think that they'll be awesome together!Córdova uses vivid imagery in this book. I liked the beginning of the book however the book didn’t pull me in and I didn’t care about the characters at all.
The romance was a surprise however I felt no chemistry between them.

Pros:
- The worldbuilding was fantastic, as was Alex's family
- RISHI
Cons:
- Love triangle
- "Bipolar eyes"
- Alex
- There were a number of times that the transitions between moments needed a lot of work. Or even, just, to exist. It's one of those books where some parts of it would work better to see onscreen than to read in print, I think. (Petition for The CW to get the rights to this and develop it!)

Alex is a bruja – one of the most powerful in her generation. However, she hates and fears her magic and she wants her magic gone. So at her Deathday celebration when she performs a spell to get rid of her magic, she couldn’t possibly imagine the consequences. The spell backfires and her entire family disappears into Los Lagos. Desperate to fix her mistake and save her family, she travels to Los Lagos with a brujo boy she doesn’t trust.
Labyrinth Lost is a fantastical, magical, and enchanting read. If this isn’t on your TBR already, I suggest you add it immediately and I’d highly recommend if you enjoy books like Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Labyrinth Lost is an original and compelling book filled with lots of culture, mythology and tradition. The world building was exceptional and it was definitely the highlight of this book.
I loved Alex – I loved both her strength and vulnerability. Her character development was really well done. At the beginning of the novel she feared her own power and was very uncertain of herself, but throughout the novel we saw her learn to control her power and eventually accept it. She accepted the responsibility and the role she played in sending her family to Los Lagos, but I loved the determination she had to fix it and get her family back. Nova was an interesting character. Not highly likeable, but complex and well fleshed out with complex motivations. Rishi was also a good character, but I do wish we had seen more of her, and more of her relationship with Alex… hopefully something that will be explored further in the sequel?
There were some good family and sisterly dynamics, lots of action and adventure, lots of diversity, and a bi protagonist. Overall, an engaging and gripping story that I highly recommend.

Why didn't I know about this book before? Why had I to stumble over an article gathering a few fantasies to learn about this wonderful book?
Once I knew about it, had to jump to Amazon and was lucky enough the book was at a great price, but anyway, it is a good book to buy and to enjoy.
Ok, I had so much fun reading about Alejandra and her journey through Los Lagos to recover her family. I loved the interactions between the sisters, I loved the brujas' mythology and how evertying gets sorted out.
It is a classical heroe's journey, I know, but at the same time it felt so fresh and well done. I loved it.

3.5 stars. This was super fast paced, entertaining, and queer! I really adored exploring the world of Los Lagos and it reminded me of how I felt while watching The Neverending Story for the first time as a child
