First-rate fantasy. This being a debut novel just makes it even more impressive.

I am so glad that I finally ventured into this realm because this first book is amazing—from its world-building to its character work to its perfectly-paced plot with enough twists to give George R. R. Martin a run for his money.

Just like some of its characters, though, you will get lost at times. Although Islington has avoided info dumps thus far, the entangled mesh of names and places and events can be a bit overwhelming.

But overall a very enjoyable first book. Looking forward to the sequels.

Okay now this was a good ride. The book is very much in the vein of Sanderson’s more serious fantasy. Honestly if you’d told me Sanderson wrote it, I’d believe you.

Crazy magic system slowly being revealed, external forces slowly squeezing action, roiling political climate, a chosen band of friends, and twists that will keep your head spinning. Really enjoyed it and can’t wait to see where it goes in the next book.
