4.5-4.75 don't even know how to write a review. my mind is still spinning. insane plot twists. the characters were easy to like. my only qualm is there were so many names and people groups that l'd often get confused. I need to go read the wiki, but l'm definitely reading the next one.

Took me a while to finish this one, but I’m glad I finally did! I thought this was a solid start to a trilogy but boy oh boy did it have some pacing issues. I’m interested to see where it goes but I think I need a break before I dive into book 2…

An interesting page turner! Short chapters that further the story, good twists/turns. Interesting promise in this one of things that MIGHT happen, either for good or evil. Good High Fantasy with Dark Fantasy elements.
I think the story and plot ideas in this book are great. Some of the reveals and twists were very compelling. I just think the writing fell short, and the characters felt very juvenile throughout. There was a lot of reliance on characters getting interrupted at juuust the right moment so the reader didn’t get full context.
Lastly, for the love of god, not every significant female character needs to be described as beautiful or attractive. Huge pet peeve. None of the male characters are described immediately as handsome (by the author or by female characters), but most (if not all!) of the female characters are beautiful. Just describe their features! Asha? Beautiful. Ishelle? Concerningly attractive and wearing tight clothing. Karalein? Gorgeous! Huge pet peeve in fantasy.

Overall i found this book to be entertaining, the characters are very enjoyable, the magic system is very unique and the world quite interesting. However, nothing really stood out to me, the characters dont have a lot of depth and the plot/world was a bit simple, it ended up being just another ok fantasy book. To me the author started off strong, giving the right time for the character/plot/world to develop however midway trhough the book thigs started to feel rushed. The final chapters, that normally are the action part of the book felt very rushed and underdeveloped and things seem to be happening just because.
I might continue the trilogy.
