Decent writing, meh world building. It started off like hard magic but just kept getting softer :(

Don’t be fooled—I plan to finish this trilogy, but let’s just say the serendipity is strong in this one. It’s an easy read, and there are some fun plot twists, but everyone kind of feels like the same character: thrown into a new, unique situation but being completely at ease regardless of how stressful or difficult it should be. Physical world building was nearly non-existent; all trees were “foliage,” all rock was “stone” or “rock” (okay, the author may have said marble once), and the only food mentioned was beef, vegetables, and bread. Ultimately, everything felt like a placeholder awaiting further characterization.
Again, I plan to continue reading to find out how everything plays out, but it’s like reading a fable or myth where events of encounters happen just because they need to and not because the story organically leads to them occurring.
Edit: I’ve been listening to Silhouette by Aquilo recently, and it just makes me wish Islington had spent more time exploring his characters. It’s all there; I just need to feel what the characters are going through more.
