I didn't see the similarities to WoT. In style, he is most like Brandon Sanderson. Things happen quickly just like in Sanderson's books. That can be good, but if you're a fan of WoT, it just makes things feel rushed. There is no feel of build-up before major events. It feels like a series of 30-minute t.v. episodes compiled into a book form. There isn't enough organic build-up of the tensions between good and bad, or of more powerful characters and less powerful characters. Instead, you learn after a conflict is over whether there should have been tension or not. But if you like fast-paced action, there is plenty of it. The characters are interesting, though like most fantasy books, it's a male dominated, all-white cast. The lack of strong, developed female characters contrasts significantly from the WoT series. Judged on its own merits, it's a fine book. But comparing it to WoT just doesn't work.

3.9 Overall I enjoyed the story but the jumping around / twists became a little exhausting at some points. The pacing was a bit slower than what I'm used to as well, but it worked for the story. The magic system and the world itself kept me interested and I can't wait to read book 2.

A reluctant journey into the unknown, the looming question of destiny, visits from future selves, and just enough magic that you can’t trust what you’re seeing. This story is full of bread crumbs that you know are being left for you—cryptic messages from someone who knows more about what’s going on than you do. You know they’ll almost certainly make sense at the end, but for now, this book introduces us to the key players and the state of play, then leaves you wanting more. Good thing the trilogy is complete and ready for me to dive back in.
So Amazing, great characters, story moved along at a fast pace and an interesting magic system.
I only wish I was better at explaining why I liked this so much.

Wow. Just WOW!
Such a great ending, to a very smoothly written and engrossing world.
Character building is well done, and I can't wait to read the next books!
