Iโm not gonna lie the fact that I even made it this far is something in of itself. God. The writing, the dialogue, everything about it!
I tried so hard to enjoy this book, but it just reads mediocre.
It reminds me of Red Rising. Really interesting at first but you quickly realize how superficial it actually is.
The tropes were screaming at me. At some point I was definitely like โOK I can get behind this. This feels like a classic adventure!โ But by God it just it was so clichรฉ. It felt very safe like nothing was explored. Nothing new was brought. I just did not enjoy it.

So, this was my first true (non-YA) high fantasy and it def was a bit to take in and keep up with at times but I really, really enjoyed this book. World building was very simple. If anything it was just a lot of characters to keep up with but not too bad.
I fear Tol Shen was 100% behind the Kingโs controlling and the armyโฆ the King was so dumb in this like yeah I sure hope he was controlled because heโs a fucking IDIOT.
Soooo Wirr and Kara know about more of the backstory with Davian and him being attacked? Seems susโฆ I like them both tho so I hope they donโt do anything evil.
I want to like and trust Taeris but he just knows too much and is not telling me what I want to know so heโs got a big ass red flag on his forehead until I get more info out of him.
Asha supremacy full stop. Loved her plot as a Representative. Girlie went THROUGH it at the beginning of this book omg

And now that Scyner knows about the Augurs?? Ugh. I loved Fessi and Kol and Erran and Iโm glad at least Fessir and Erran have survived and escaped the city.
Damn so Davian really just slurped up annoying as Ionis in .02 seconds huh. He was annoying and Iโm glad he died.
Iโm still desperate for answers about what the Watcher told Asha. โdeath is coming. For myself, my siblings. Four hunt, one hides, cognizant of what he is. A true traitor. An escherii. And I watchโ. And then he also asks her that when the time comes, โnot to let Vhalire sufferโ. Sir imma need you to tell me who the fuck is Vhalire !!
Asha clearly is going to be incredibly relevant to all of this which is crazy to me. Like I NEEEEED to know why she was chosen / protected by Devaed and what for.
So Davianโs whole training thing with Malshashโฆ and Asha gave him the ring at the end that Davian gave to Malshash that he gives to Davianโฆ? Kind of a mind fuck for me but Iโm SUPER excited to see where that all goes. Still suspecting that Malshash is Davian or someone else weโve already introduced to. I can feel a giant twist coming in book 2 or 3 for sure.
And future Davian coming to Asha to tell her to pass on the message to the Shadraehin that Caeden (Talโkammar) took Licanius to the Wells?? Wack.
Are Asha and Davian fated to end up together? I hope.
Obviously Caeden/Talโkammar/Aarkein Devaed is the most interesting character. Very layered. I like him but I cannot risk him being my fave because he seems so evil. Also heโs 4000 years old??? Wack. Interesting he grew up in the Shining Lands. So that means he destroyed his own home landsโฆ tea.
Overall, really enjoyed this book and Iโm so exited to read the rest of the series. James Islington is quickly becoming a fav of mine.

Writing: You have to stay on your toes when reading this, you won't get information for free and the author won't remind you of previous events/characters. Actually very refreshing. This book is so well structured, every detail seems planned and has a purpose. It feels well though out. Also the world building is ๐๐ผ
