Great cast of complex, multifaceted characters. The plot moves along swiftly, making it a gripping page-turner. Islington has a great storytelling technique that foreshadows major plot points beautifully but subtly to make each turning point a delightful surprise. I'm eagerly awaiting book 2 of the Licanius Trilogy!

This was such a rollercoaster.
I felt off kilter for a good bit as I learned the world, the magic system, and alllll the names. What’s a Tol? And the Shadraehin and sha’teth are two separate things? Which Elder now? I couldn’t recall half of these terms as I read them, but I believe I still got the gist.
Also there are SO many men in this book. I need Asha x 50, please.
Speaking of Asha, I loved how significant each POV was. They all had an important role to play. But the line between right and wrong felt sooooo thin and blurry. I feel like any one of them could turn on me at any moment, which is terrifying and exciting all at once.
I also can’t remember a book that left me with my actually jaw on the floor! I really did love it overall and will be continuing the series.

I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery, tension, and world building in this novel. If I had only one complaint, it would be that I found to be the names of characters and locations to be a little silly and come off as being taken from a ‘random fantasy name generator’.
