For some reason, this was a hard book for me to get into. I normally love learning about new magic systems and the rules of a new world, but it took me forever to get through this. It sat unopened for long enough that I had mostly forgotten what was going on by the time I finally finished it (which is my fault, of course).

I may have to re-read it before I get to the sequel, but that probably won't be anytime soon.

James Islington writes incredibly interesting and tightly written plots. This book just lacked for me more in the character department. While I’m interested in what happens in the story, I just didn’t care much for the characters themselves.
