Solid book! A refreshingly simple and enjoyable modern fantasy. Doesn’t try to be anything more than what it should be. It’s here to entertain, and it does so with lovable characters, an interesting, ever developing plot, intense moments and twists everywhere, all the way to the end. Can’t wait to see what else these books have to offer!

I really enjoyed this book. It took a while for it to hook me, but when it did I basically couldn't stop reading. If I could have, though, I would have given it more of a 4.5. Some of the writing is simplistic, and the names of people and places are needlessly complicated, but not in ways that make it unpleasant to read.

Will be starting the second book in the series very soon!

It has been twenty years since the god-like Augurs were overthrown and killed. Now, those who once served them - the Gifted - are spared only because they have accepted the rebellion's Four Tenets, vastly limiting their own powers.

As a young Gifted, Davian suffers the consequences of a war lost before he was even born. He and others like him are despised. But when Davian discovers he wields the forbidden powers of the Augurs, he sets in motion a chain of events that will change everything.

To the west, a young man whose fate is intertwined with Davian's wakes up in the forest, covered in blood and with no memory of who he is... And in the far north, an ancient enemy long thought defeated, begins to stir.

Although the book is around 600 pages, the author doesn't waste time learning about the characters before the plot is set in motion.  For the main part, the book focuses on Asha's, Wirr and Davian's POVs, but there are other people who are briefly followed.

Since Davian and Wirr set out to discover why the boundary up north is failing, little do they realise that something bad has happened at their school, which they just left.  And Asha has awoken to a school where someone has slaughtered everyone except herself, and as she comes to terms with the aftermath, she believes that her friends are dead, and once they hear about the school, they assume the same for Asha.

At times, the initial part of the book was a little slow to read due to the amount of information that was happening, but as more of the book went on and the plot advanced, it went quicker and more of the story was revealed.  As for the rating, I feel that it is a solid four-star read. The length of the book and the pacing were a little slow I couldn't rate it higher as it wasn't captivating enough.

this was really good but that sense of confusion never left me 😩 can’t wait to continue!

It started out really strong and I was hooked instantly but too many convenient turn of events and frankly, not compelling story telling ruined the experience for me. I will still continue with the rest of the series, mainly for the Asha and Caeden POVs.
