I waited on this book because I don’t usually read books by white men. I gave in and got it on Libby and was immediately hooked. How can a book so serious be so funny and adorable?!  There’s almost nothing I can say about setting or characters that make isn’t a spoiler but both are phenomenal. I could barely put this down.

Just a couple notes, one chapter used “stupid” more than a dozen times which is completely unnecessary (cloudy, tired, drugged, distracted, not 100% were all perfectly fine options) I also disagree with the author’s choice
on using he/him when gendering Rocky. The author even mentioned it being a choice and then when he got more information decided to stick with He/him. What a wonderful opportunity it could have been to be more inclusive.

This was so very close to being a DNF for me as there is a LOT of maths and science involved, particular in the beginnings that were going over my head. However, I was encouraged to persist and I'm glad I did. The journey and humanity of the tale that comes strongly into the second half made it worth it - you can let the technical stuff go over your head & still get the gist. Audiobook as opposed to text almost feels like a MUST, due to a very specific element in the story. I'm sure I wouldn't have had the same experience had I read it in text. Narrator was fantastic.

I’m actually shocked I liked this. I did not think I would give a adult Syfy a five star. I just really enjoyed the characters and just getting to know them. There is one character that I love with my whole heart. This was also really funny, but at times sad because I did tear up a few times. It was interesting learning more about space. I’m not going to lie some parts went over my head because I didn’t fully understand them. I would highly recommend this and the audio book because of a certain character and the voice.

Another great read from Andy Weir.

This one was not at The Martian level, but we can't have it all.

The first couple of pages into this I was hit by the realization that I completely forgot how much I loved Andy Weir's sense of humour. It just hits so well for me and I appreciate that to no end because no one likes when humour is attempted and then subsequently fails.

I don't want to get into the plot too much, because I think it's something that you really need to experience without any prior info. But I will say I was fully engaged, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed throughout, and I sped through it because I really wanted to find out how everything would pan out. I didn't want to ever put it down, but alas, real life had other ideas, so I was really happy that it was easy to slip back into when I picked it back up again.

Getting to watch the relationship between Ryland and Rocky was a treat. I enjoyed everything about it. I'm not really sure how believable the progression was with respect to the pacing because time and relativity were definitely wreaking havoc on everything plot related, but I enjoyed it, so really I don't think it matters much if it made sense or not because I was 110% invested.

I would've preferred the ending to give a little more info as to what happened on Earth. I understand that circumstances couldn't exactly allow for that to happen but I still wanted to know.

The full circle teaching moment though? Perfection.

All in all, I think that this delivered everything as expected in terms of my expectations going into it, which is all you can really ask for with a new release from an author you enjoy, so kudos to Mr. Weir for that.

I definitely recommend this one if you enjoyed The Martian, or if you're just in the mood for a solid sci-fi adventure where the stakes are ever high, death is inevitably around every star that surrounds our solar system, and friendship is just as important as saving the human race.
