At first it was a quite exciting read and I devoured the first half of this book. The authors speciality in describing physics, space and science shows a great understanding and is a delight for science buffs. But after reading hours and hours of it I just couldn't take it anymore.... another experiment, another fun of of the box physics thing he does in space.... I don't know it took all the fun for me away and I tried to speed read these parts and skipped pages of this book just to finish it.
Love rocky though and enjoyed every encounter with him. <3

Even if you usually swing more towards the fantasy side of the fantasy/sci-fi genre, I HIGHLY recommend this book. The way this book is organized is so impactful, with the main character waking from a coma out in space and unable to remember why he's there. Throughout the book, he slowly recovers his memories, thus discovering that not everything is as it seems.
I'm being a little vague in my review, because this book is fun to read without any prior information. But rest-assured, you won't regret picking up this book about courage, sacrifice, and, ultimately, eternal friendship.

The only note I can give this book is that you have to suspend disbelief to accept how much science the MC knows- but that's pretty much par for the course of an Andy Weir book, and didn't bother me too much.

There is a lot of rather complicated science jargon in this book, from near-light-speed travel to the minute details of the biology of alien lifeforms, and this could have easily made the book dense and patronising if it were not for the fact that Ryland Grace is so likeable. As a rather unlikely candidate for saviour of humanity, he makes a perfect protagonist with a combination of awe and excitement at interstellar travel and alien communication as well as sarcasm and humour easily coming across in the narration.
The only thing preventing me from giving this book five stars is that I think the ending is a little too short and sweet, with all the loose ends wrapped up rather conveniently. Time skip endings rarely land for me, but this is a small letdown I’m willing to overlook because the rest of this book is absolutely brilliant!

Explicit discussion of planned assisted suicide - one of the methods that are discussed would be drug overdose.vif's review against another edition
