DNF. Snaps my beloved, the dog made the whole book. Also super cool with the non-binary character. But could not finish. The alien bug sex was not it man. I just can’t get over uh the bug parts

I’m sure it’s good just not for me.

Absolutely delightful I loved this so much

The MMC’s appearance reminded me a lot of Garrus which added a lot to my enjoyment

I loved how much humor and lightheartedness this had and how caring they were to each other, and how much consent was spotlighted

A very creative sci-fi romance with solid characters to fall in love with. I love it when we get the misunderstandings as 2 species are trying to communicate and I appreciated that Beryl and Zylar hung in there like mature adults and worked through their differences rather than have hurts and drama. I appreciate stories with mature and honest h & H's.

Beryl and Snaps are abducted by accident, during the ending of a war reenactment of all things- clever writing. Turns out it was a big mistake and now Beryl has to adapt to being in an alien world with alien rules with a talking dog. She is not given much info AT ALL and neither are we about this whole Choosing thing but she steps up without any whining which is good. I would have massively whined.

That part was a little thin, was there no training for the physical events ahead where people actually die? The whole thing was brutal but super interesting. What was a miss for me was a few plot holes. I would have liked to know more about the trials, more about the plan for revenge against Ryzen (sp?) as well as it felt like a major bummer that they were stripped of all status and belongings. Happy for them but it felt like it ended on a negative HEA rather than a positive HEA.

Beryl was great but Snaps definitely stole the show. Loved Zylar but his dread and fear at the end affected me. It played well with his character though, more beta than alpha. Definitely sexy times between them but once again, plot hole for me as I must have missed the part about his parts? I thought I read that they were slits and had a completely different vision in my head.

Anyway- fun read.

Quotes:
“Fuck it,” Beryl said. “Out-bonding it is. Let’s see where this goes.”
Zylar could not possibly have understood the female correctly. Her words registered as: Copulation! Let’s join and find out how this works.

Too funny as they work out communication.
“My intended. My Terrible One.”
“Ah, right. More of your sweet talk, got it.”

And Snaps!
“Come on. How bad could it be?”
That was a rhetorical question, but nobody had explained that concept to dogs because he answered, “They could eat us. Burn us. Or put us in cages. Not all at once.”
“Thanks.”
“I’m here to help,” said Snaps.

----and----

He was about to rush out and start a frantic search when Snaps bounded into their quarters. Quivering, he knelt and put a claw gently on the fur-person’s head.
“I’m very glad to see you,” he said.
“Now that is a proper welcome for a good boy,” said Snaps.

Zylar has such an honesty and earnestness, no wonder Beryl fell for him:

“Terrible One, I’m most willing to receive affection from you in whatever form you wish to bestow it. If I find the delivery method strange, I believe I can adapt.”
“Then hold still.”
