So good. You all need to read book, Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves before diving into this but it's so worth it. I don't want to say it improved, but the world-building just hit different here. So many elements were explained so much clearer and built upon what we already knew. From the great characters, to the plot, to the ending, this sequel was executed good.

A special thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press & Wednesday Books for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Most of the relationships were under-developed, and the one that wasn't was full of repetitive angst and Remy's constant self-flagellation was exhausting. It also seems inconsistent that her genopath abilities are supposed to be specialized on reading people and situations but she struggles so much reading e.g., Kiran. That being said, when the plot was actually moving it was fun and action-packed, the world-building was a nice contrast to that in the first, and the villains were fun to hate.

I should also say the audiobook narrator was fantastic.

This follows Remy who was raised and engineered at Nova where they raise engineered humans called genopaths and have unique abilities. Remy was rescued by a friend who helped open her eyes to the world, and yet failed protecting her friend and is now trying to find this best friend and the only way she can is by finding her ex-partner Kiran who knows secrets and who will know where to find her friend. However, Remy ends up being dragged into a revolution on the jungle planet Maraas where Kiran asks for her help and offers to help her in return.

This was a fantastic book! I didn’t realize it was technically a sequel, and I plan on reading the first book next or soon to get a better idea of the world, and these characters, like Sena and her wolf. It does have a rather slow start and there’s a lot of detail put into this book, but that did not deter me from the story! I loved the world! I love the idea of traveling to different and unique planets, it makes me think of No Man’s Sky the video game. Just so fascinating!

I really liked the characters! Remy was just fantastic! Her unique abilities were so interesting and her friendship with Sena was beautiful to see. My only issue is that although Remy is a great character, she did frustrate me at times and drove me nuts with her assumptions, especially about Kiran. Miscommunication is a pet peeve of mine, and for someone who is literally programmed to read people, I don't understand how she could not read Kiran.

Other than that, I really enjoyed this book, and I would say Kiran is my favorite character next to Sena. I look forward to the next book because there has to be another one after that ending! There better be!

I look forward to going back and reading the first book in this series! I received a free digital copy to read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I liked this one better than the first book. I think the MC was often repetitive in some of her thoughts similar to the MC in Cold the Night. I like the different worlds created in the series though so far I wouldn’t want to live on either one I’ve read about.

Would have been a 3.25 if it weren’t for that ending and the FEELINGS it gave me.

Interesting world building and concept, some of it was rather repetitive and at times stale, but nice characters and the ending was definitely a whirlwind that left me screaming and wanting more.

I won this in a Goodreads giveaway, and since it is YA, I offered it to my high school students to read. Three senior students attempted to read it and they collectively gave it two stars. The first two students DNF’d it saying that it was too repetitive, especially with regard to word choices, and they couldn’t get into it. The third student is still reading it, but said that the plot is okay but maybe isn’t executed well and there were unnecessary word choices. He said it was too easy to put it down in favor of other books, which is why he is still reading it months later. I will update this review if his thoughts change upon completion of the novel or if other students choose to read it and would like to leave a review of their own.
