A very long book about societal pressures that markets itself as a mystery/thriller

This was a big miss for me - it definitely suffers from translation and is far wordier than it needs to be.

I try not to DNF books. Hence this took me 8 months to finish. I could not pick up another book until I finished this one. Unfortunately it took me 8 months to finish.

Slow. Unimaginative messages. Unbelievable (in a bad way) metaphors. Did nothing but tell. Long-winded.

Struggled with this one. Started strong with interesting writing but about a third in the plot went off the rails and everything just seemed to happen to drag the book along. None of the characters felt distinct from another, their motivations and beliefs seemed to chop and change. It was never clear whether we were meant to side with Kajii or not, or even whether she’d actually done anything. The food descriptions were very good but i was sick of them by the end. The social observations felt a bit obvious but this could have been cultural differences between Japan and the UK. Probably could have been a lot shorter.
