I have mixed feelings regarding this book. On the one hand, the struggle between wanting to be human and incapable of being so is interesting, not to mention there are some good character developments in the book, especially that of my favorite character - Lucas. Unfortunately, there are a lot of problems with this book, to the extent that I was pretty sure this would be a 1-star book after reading the first half, thus the 3 star rating is largely due to the exciting plot in the latter half of the book. Being the first book in a series, it's really dangerous to go so slowly in the beginning as the author risks readers dropping out before even getting to the good stuff.

The problems:

1) Extremely slow pacing in the beginning
2) The fangirling and illogical actions of an android girl
3) Bitchy school girls
4) Unrealistic plot
5) No development at all for Hunter, who is supposedly the major love interest (though judging from his name and the introduction of a new character in the second half of the book, it's likely we will be getting a love triangle, the one thing I hate!)

I just couldn't stand the dialogue here. Mila was literally a doormat for every other character. I'm done with this.

Hmmm...I was stoked about this book, and the cover totally helped to increase my excitement. I was expecting heart-pounding action, awesome tech, and a great cliffhanger (according to the blurb at least.)
There was also the expectation of some slow, simmering romance that would gradually build.

I was ready to absolutely love this book, but there were some parts I could not bring myself to like. First off, there wasn't really a cliffhanger. Nah. Also, the character development was stunted except in the case of Mila's relationship with her mom. Everyone else just showed up...and then disappeared. Mila herself, I liked, she was easy to root for, but she was so typical. Bleh. Her obnoxious "friend" Kaylee? Yeah no, she was useless. It was really her mom who I could see a growing relationship and understanding developing.

The romance was.....there? I just didn't enjoy it. There was Hunter, who falls in love with her after like a minute, and they have a secret meeting in the barn....stuff happens. Bye Hunter. Enter Lucas, a nice guy working for the bad guys, who seems to care for her.....stuff happens. Bye Lucas. Oh hey Hunter, I need your help. END OF BOOK. That was honestly it. I felt nothing for Hunter, who she kept thinking about, and then Lucas, I don't even think he was supposed to be a love interest, although it's pretty confusing when she compares the two.

Yes it sounds awful right? The good thing was, the bad stuff was focused on very little of the time. The main focus is the action and the suspense and it delivers. Mila discovers she is an android, activate defense capabilities and badaboom she can FIGHT. Throw in some bad guys, and an evil scientist/madman, it is automatically a fun book. Mila has to learn how to use both her human and android abilities to rise up and it is so very awesome.

The end was not a cliffhanger, but it will lead into the next book, which will no doubt be suspenseful and will probably answer some questions.

But the real question remains *serious face*....how on earth does Mila 2.0 go to the bathroom if she's an android?

The first 100 pages of Mila 2.0 felt very familiar. A special girl with a mysterious and tragic past moves to a new town where she has trouble fitting in. She has to deal with mean girls, but she also meets a dreamy boy. In other words, it's what we've seen over and over again in young adult books lately. But then the plot takes a very different turn, and things get really interesting.

I have to admit that my interest wasn't really held by this book in the beginning, but I stuck with it because the comparison to the Bourne Identity made me think that the plot was going to pick up steam at some point. And it definitely did. After she's in an accident, Mila learns that she's actually an android created by the government and her "mother" is a scientist who busted her out of the lab and ran away to start a new life. Mila and her mother find themselves on the run from both the shadowy government agency that created her and another group that wants her for their own purposes. The book quickly turns into a fast-paced, action-packed thriller.

Despite the shaky start, I really ended up enjoying Mila 2.0. It's a decent thriller, and there's lots of action and intrigue. Mila is an interesting character. She's not human, but she's programmed to believe she is, complete with a full range of emotions and memories of a life she never lived. Finding out that she's not human brings up a very complicated set of emotions, and it's interesting to watch her process all of this, even as she's fighting for her life. I enjoyed the action and the more thoughtful parts of the book. Less successful, in my opinion, was Mila's romance with Hunter. It felt rushed, and I didn't really see the point of it, but I suppose if there is a sequel, it might be important. Even with that complaint, I definitely enjoyed this book and I would recommend it.

I received an ARC from Amazon Vine.

I vacillated between thinking Mila 2.0 was all right and absolutely hating it, so I'm going to land on 1.5 stars. Most of it I did not like (the hateful "friends," the overdependence on some boy Mila met two days ago, and her overdramatic emotional responses--does the author think all sixteen-year-old girls are like this?? Jesus, it was more stereotypical than anything I've seen on the CW), but there were some redeeming features.

First and foremost among those was Mila's relationship with her mother. ("Mother".) It was tender and more realistic than any of the other relationships (save for perhaps the depiction of Lucas' surprise at finding how human-like Mila is compared to Three). Mila's admiration and love for her mother, even when they were fighting, rang true, as did their reconciliation. The airport scene where they reaffirm that they're a team was a moving calm-before-the-storm.

All in all, however, "Mila 2.0" was a huge letdown. I had hoped for something that could encourage female YA readers to consider science fiction as a genre that they could turn to, but this "Mila 2.0" is science fiction only in that some of the characters are androids. Mila spent so much time and effort (well over a hundred pages!) fretting over how human she was when it was obvious that her machine-ness wasn't an issue that honestly held water.

So, "Mila 2.0" might masquerade as science fiction, but it's only lowbrow YA rubbish. Fans of science fiction will be disappointed and so will any romance fans.

Mila 2.0 is an action packed book that will change your life.

Wait... No... Wrong Book.

Sure, Mila 2.0 is filled with action, adventure, romance, and suspense but this book is nothing special.

Mila goes to school, fights with her best friend over a guy, almost kisses that guy, and gets thrown off the back of her best friends pick up truck. Nothing special

But then Mila finds out that she is an android. She and her "mom" start running from the military, then get captured by the military. Still nothing special.

Overall it was not horrible but it was not amazing. I suggest reading this right after you read a book you did not like. That way this book will seem even better.

Neat premise, but it lost its grip on me once the major (and obvious) conflict was revealed.
